radius
Aleksa Salve, Brian Chan
2nd year architecture students
Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, 2016
The radial zones which originated in the existing school, are individually distinct and provide students the spaces to spend more time outside in a beautiful environment. Utilizing the radial organization, it provides the school room to “grow” if there is a need in the future. From this concept of growing, we wanted to connect all aspects of the project with nature, growth, and outdoor learning. Our proposal calls for a respectful and site conscious design that uses the existing organization as the foundation for further interventions.
Focused around the idea of growing over time, our project aims to transform the center of the school with the help of the students. By addressing topics important to the students such as water collection, filtration, and reuse, the project builds upon nature rather than ignoring it. It also provides spaces for classes, the school as a whole, and even the surrounding community to gather.
