classroom cubby walls
Eugene Wong, 3rd year Architecture studio,
Carnegie Mellon 2012
Interactivity between nature and learning is encouraged by the presence of a series of cubby like aperture units used in both outdoor and indoor settings. The module is used as storage and furniture units for the interior, and as screening and terraced seating units at the exterior. By displacing something familiar to the kids such as a cubby and placing them in nature, the goal is to create connections between learning and the environment and between the different age groups. Spaces are organized within each classroom unit such that the transparency of this facade unit helps promote the integration between outdoor and indoor learning. Nature becomes part of the learning environment because it is linked by this familiar object.
